Building relationships with your audience is not only beneficial but necessary! if you want your business to succeed then you need to build a community that will show up for you time and again.
There are eight simple steps to creating a highly engaged community and I’m going to teach them to you today!
01 | Be human:
Don’t treat your business like a robot. People want to be able to relate and create a genuine connection with you and your brand. Think of your company as a go to spot in your field, a place for them to learn and grow with likeminded people.
As the leader, it’s your duty to facilitate connections with and among your people. If someone leaves a comment, respond. If someone replies to an email with a question, write back. Treat your followers the same way you would any in-real-life connections… with kindness, respect, and diligence.
02 | Write for easy reading:
These days there is so much content to consume and everyone’s live are so busy that it is hard to grab their attention. They prefer shorter, easy-to-read sentences that are less formal and more personable.
Here are some tips to make reading your article easier:
- Break up your paragraphs into no more than 4-5 sentences and write your content the way you speak.
- When scrolling through social media and you see a post that makes you say, “that’s so me!” make a note of it and write an article on the topic.
- Create descriptive titles and headers that make people think ” I have to read this”.
03 | Include an option to subscribe:
This is the most important step and one that so many people forget to setup!
Think about this… If someone made it to the end of your article, chances are they enjoyed and connected with what you had to say. Most people find a blog, brand or company only to forget about them because there is so much content out there to consume.
Make sure they won’t forget about you by including an opt-in form at the end of your posts. At the very least, include social media buttons, with encouragement to follow you or to “say hey”. Create a Facebook group for them to join, anything that will keep your new audience around for the long haul.
04 | Ask questions and listen to the answers:
The most important part of building a thriving tribe is knowing and accepting that the community is not just about you, it is about everyone who joins and in order to create a community structure your followers story needs to be just as important as your own.
This can be done in a number of ways, but the easiest is to just ask questions – and then genuinely listen to the responses. Ask questions at the end of your posts, prompting readers to share what they think.
Ask questions on your Facebook page, so that readers can share a little more about who they are. Ask interesting questions on Twitter, allowing your followers to share their feedback.
When people give you a piece of themselves and their perspective, they’re likely to build a more emotional connection with your brand, and will not only return to your site, but will share it with others, too.
05 | Create amazing and valuable content consistently:
Give your readers valuable content and make sure they can depend on by showing up for them consistently. Whether it’s daily, weekly, or monthly, be consistent and focus on quality over quantity.
People would prefer to read one amazing article’s of yours that a handful that are not that valuable and thought through. If your blog lacks commitment, it’ll be hard for your audience to commit to you, too. The more value your blog has to your readers’ life, the more likely they are to share your content and keep coming back for more.
06 | Encourage people to stick around:
Getting your kind of people to read your content is great, but getting them to stick around to read more posts or visit other parts of your website afterwards is better!
Get people to relate to you so that they will want to come back again for more content.
How do you do this?
By having enough valuable content so that readers will want to stick around for awhile. A great way to ensure this is by utilizing internal linking(i.e. linking to previous, relevant posts within a new post), or displaying related posts, and or including category buttons on your sidebar.
Bottom line… give your new readers a reason to stay.
07 | You can’t be something for everyone, niche down:
Sometimes we like to spread ourselves thin and try to create content that is not necessarily our expertise. I live by the saying “You can’t be something for everyone”, and if you try you are only doing a disservice to yourself and your followers.
If you have a viral pin on Pinterest of five healthy summer lunches and readers flock to your site to see you are a social media company… what service are they going to have gotten from finding your site? None. So niche down to the categories that you know you can show up for.
08 | Contribute to other sites by doing guest posts:
Guest posting on other websites is valuable because you open your website up to a new set of readers. Write topics that they can relate to and want to read more of so that they will go in search of your site and social media channels!
